When traveling to Kenya you will soon notice that this will be far from cheap especially when you are planning to do a safari. Since my husband and I arrived in Kenya in 2015 we did a couple of safaris. As we like to travel frequently, going on a safari every other month is out of our reach. So I started to do some research on unique local hideaways in Kenya that are affordable. This is my top 6.

Olomayiana, Bisil

Unique getaway Kenya

Getaway KenyaWe found this hidden gem 9 months ago and already have been there 3 times. The place is owned by Yolande and her family and built as their own weekend getaway.

The private camp is located a 2-hour drive south of Nairobi in the Maparasha hills. The Maparasha hills are on a migration corridor for Amboseli National Park. During the dry season, there is insufficient grazing to support for Amboseli’s wildlife population. As a result, there is mass migration out of the park as far, and beyond Olomayiana.

As soon as you take the dirt road off the A104 (kitengela and Tanzania border) in Bisil no-man’s-land starts. The camp is built on a hill overlooking the south Kenyan plains with no village or road to see in the far distance.

Sundowner spotYolande built two houses based on her own design, the glass house and the hobbit house. Both are truly stunning! The rooms have the possibility to leave the front side open so that you look into the open. If you are lucky you will see a group of baboons, hear the hyena’s at night or even see a leopard that comes once a week to drink at the little watering hole.

Furthermore they have 3 furnished tents. The camp is self-catering with a full-equipped kitchen, a BBQ, charcoal pizza oven and sitting area with a campfire place. If you want to cool off you can have a swim in the pool that has great views on the Kenyan plains. Finish your day with a sundowner just a 10 minutes walk up hill.

For some activity you can have a walk in the bush during day time with Ken, their guide, ride one of their horses, visit a local Maasai village, the local orphanage or further afield a natural spring.

We love the peacefulness and privacy of this place! Oh, and the place is all yours when you book so no other guests!

Banana Farmhouse, Kiambu

Farmstay Kenya

Banana Farmhouse is beautifully located just 20 km outside Nairobi in the Tigoni highlands, a region famous for its tea. The house belongs to Julia and Phil, a lovely couple from the UK and Australia. The farmhouse has been in their family for a couple of generations.

Upon arrival you will be warmly welcomed with a cup of tea or coffee and if you are lucky with some homemade cake or cookies. We couldn’t stop eating! When sitting at the veranda you have a magnificent view over the 24 acres of fields dropping down to indigenous woodland and in the far distance you can even see the Ngong hills on a clear day.

View from farmJulia and Phil have 3 lovely decorated double bedrooms. They also have a swimming pool and tennis court (under construction) if you want to do some exercise. Julia can cook you a delicious dinner that is served in the large dining room with fireplace. They also farm a small number of Jersey cows.

The next morning you will be delighted to see a delicious breakfast served on the veranda with homemade sour dough bread, fresh milk, yoghurt, fruits and tea or coffee.

A wonderful place to stay if you don’t want to drive too far from Nairobi.

Hansel and Gretel house, Karen

I recently discovered this place when looking for something in Nairobi. The River House as it is officially called is located next to the Hemingway hotel in Karen.

When we arrived, it immediately made me think of the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel. It is stunning; decorated with lots of different arty items that immediately make you feel at home.

BathroomThe bathroom is truly unique, tucked away in a private room outside the house that you can reach by bridge. It has two classic bathtubs and two showers. The house has a fully equipped kitchen, sitting area with fireplace, and outside lounge area. It has one bedroom with a unique and large bed that can sleep 3 or 4. There is also a second floor that you can reach with a ladder and where they have created a second double bed on the floor. You can simply sit here and read for hours through the collection of books they have.

The smell of the trees, chirping birds and the sound of a small stream welcomed us the next morning. We loved it!

When we were there they were just finishing a second, smaller house that is connected to the main one so perfect when you are with two families.

Ol Popongi Camp, Lake Navaisha

private camp Lake NavaishaIn October last year we stayed at Ol Popongi with a group of friends. Everybody simply loved it! It is a private little camp with six luxurious tents, a swimming pool, and fully equipped kitchen. The chef John can help you cook delicious meals.

Its location provides various options; from visiting Lake Navaisha, Hells gate or Mount Longonot and it is just a 1,5 hour drive from Nairobi.

Also this one you can find on Airbnb.

Menengai Crater Camp, Nakuru

Unique accommodation Lake NakuruI found this place when looking for something near Lake Nakuru. The camp is located on the edge of the magnificent, dormant, Menengai Crater. It is just half an hour drive to the main gate of the national park.

What is truly special about this place, besides its stunning location, is that its profit supports local women in hospitality education. The women often do an internship in the camp itself to gain experience.

The restaurant serves you delicious food with a wonderful service that I haven’t seen for a long time.

lodge Nakuru KenyaAll tents are overlooking the crater, and are equipped with comfortable beds, attached bathroom, a pleasant verandah or private terrace.

When you want to cool off you simply take a plunge in the infinity pool. Check for more info.
