Finding unique places to stay while on holiday is always one of my main challenges. I am just not quickly satisfied and always looking for small scale, cozy and comfortable places to stay. What I have discovered is that a new type of accommodation has popped up in the last few years: staying on a farm.
Not only in Europe or the US, but also in Asia you can nowadays find many farm accommodations. Whether it is to charge your batteries and be in the middle of nature or because you want to cover your travel costs while volunteering on a farm. There are many options for different farm stays.
Unwind, soak up the natural beauty, learn about different farming techniques, or help in taking care of the animals. Combine this with delicious homemade farm food, and meeting warm-hearted local people and you have an authentic travel experience you will not forget.
I have gathered 12 amazing farm accommodations across Asia that you would love to go and that let you return home with some amazing memories.
Organic orchard farm, Philippines
Mariano has built this natural farm in 2008 with the goal to make it healthy and work in harmony with nature. The farm is located near Bago City on the island of Negros Occidental. It used to be an abandoned piece of land which soil was unproductive. He has brought it back to life with different kind of fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, ornamental plants and livestock. He uses microorganisms to fertilize the soil, which not only resulted in increasing its biodiversity, but also in growing healthy, organic food.
You can help on the farm, share knowledge, relax in the middle of nature and learn about their culture and local farming. In return for your help you get a free place to sleep and they will serve you homegrown food.
A mountain farmstay in Mindanao, Philippines
Teresita Bahala and her family run a farm on the foothills of a mountain on the island of Mindanao. Their land is blessed with freshwater springs, rivers and an abundance of tropical jungle. It is bustling with plants and animals and skies are filled with many species of endemic birds during the day and battalions of fireflies at night.
You can help on the farm if you wish, make a hike or just relax at your cottage. They serve you with home cooked meals out of locally sourced and mostly organic ingredients. The menu always changes according to what is available; fresh fish from the farms fishpond, organic banana heart in fresh coconut milk, but also, curries, soups, noodles, delicious pizzas out of our oven, or freshly baked bread with sesame butter and wild honey.
Relax and enjoy a stay at a 100-year-old farm villa, Sri Lanka
Rest, relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere in this 100-year-old ancestral farmhouse that is located on 10 acres of land run by Ranjan and his wife Maduka. They started this farm 18 years ago to escape the city and lingered for a more natural life style.
Nowadays they produce organic green tea, traditional variety of rice, spices, fruits and vegetables and are really open to share their learning experiences with guests. They serve you freshly prepared Sri Lankan cuisine cooked with homegrown or locally sourced food.
There are many activities you can do in the surroundings. You can go for a hike, visit the Gatabaruwa Temple, hike to waterfalls or do a guided trip to Sinharaja, which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of hilly virgin rainforest.
In the evenings you can relax and listen to the sounds of the night in their lovely garden.
Experience Sri Lankan farm life, Sri Lanka
Ayesha and Nalin run a wonderful project. They started a small domestic farm with mixed livestock and vegetables and a fruit garden, but at the same time develop the community where the farm is located. They run various projects to help the community.
You can immerse in this community life. They provide nice accommodation, you can learn how to make incense, go fishing with a local fisherman, learn to cook typical Sri Lankan food, help at the farm or join in a community project. A local experience guaranteed that you would not forget!
Farm accommodation on a rice farm, Thailand
The Watasittikul family owns a rice farm in the hills of northern Thailand. The family runs the farm already for 4 generations. beautiful hills of Northern Thailand. You can enjoy the fresh air, the sounds of the birds and the delicious home-cooked food made by mother Tomei. She cooks with a variety of fresh farm products that grow around the farm, like wild mushrooms, ferns and plants.
There are many things to do around the farm. Help with preparing the paddy fields, sowing the seeds and trimming the sides of the plot, harvesting the rice or meet with the unique Karen Hill tribe people. They also have some great opportunities for doing yoga and meditation in the middle of nature.
Stay on a farm near Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
Just 30 minutes outside Ho Chi Minh City you will find this tranquil place surrounded by nature run by Ms. Dao. She will give you a farmstay experience with a real authentic feel.
You can relax in your hammock, cycle through the surroundings, or stroll around her lush garden filled with tropical fruit trees, vegetables and flowers. The dishes she serves are made of fresh ingredients grown on the farm. You can even help in the kitchen to learn to make Vietnamese dishes.
Unique farmstay close to Hanoi, Vietnam
Just 80 km outside Hanoi is the farm village experience of Mr. Thy that gives you an insight into rural Vietnam. You can join the farmers on their farmland, go for a hike with one of the local guides, or join a local fisherman with catching fish.
You can sleep in the traditional stilt house. He offers two private bedrooms and one shared bedroom available on the open floor of the stilt house.
Delicious Vietnamese food is served that you can even help prepare yourself. All ingredients come from the local farmland, a great way to explore typical Vietnamese country life.
Stunning farmhouse in Sikkim, India
To get to the farmhouse of Thendup and Pema in West Sikkim you have to drive through groves of bamboo to reach the rustic heritage house that was built in 1833. The farm is surrounded by mountains and tucked away from the crowds. The 44-acres are covered with forest of pine, Himalayan alder, schima, chestnut, magnolia, rhododendrons, cherry and other trees.
They offer simple and rustic wood paneled rooms in Tibetan style with private bathrooms with hot and cold running water. Pema serves freshly prepared, hearty meals made with fresh, organic farm products. You can even taste Sikkim cheese, nettle soup and a wide range of other tasty, local dishes. You can dine in their cozy living room or choose to be served on your verandah or in a gazebo overlooking the fields and hills.

Farmstay in Nepal
Shamser and his wife Kalpana started this farm in their home village Gaunshahar, a beautiful place in northwestern Nepal. Their goal was to give back to their community, which they are doing by running a local school as well.
It is a perfect place to experience traditional Nepalese life away from the tourist trail. You can get involved in farming and building authentic mud or earthen houses for our village, go for amazing hiking, learn Nepali or even spend a night in the jungle.
The accommodation is simple, but comfortable with hot water and free Wi-Fi. They cook delicious Nepalese food with fresh ingredients from the farm.
A nice thing to mention is that 10% of their profit will be donated to the people of the village.
Little piece of heaven in India
The little piece of heaven of Lyat and Julia is located at the foothills of the Himalayas, a lovely orchard and vegetable farm. The home-cooked food is to die for and served with love.
You can either stay at their main house or in an estate cottage 200 meters away from the main house that will provide you with sufficient privacy. Food is served in the main dining area of the farmhouse.
There are plenty of things to do; if you love cooking, you can join the baking, desert and jam making classes of Julia. Hiking enthusiasts can go for a long hike to Mukteshwar or visit the nearby apricot oil-extracting unit. You can also relax in their tranquil garden with a book.
Farm experience for the soul, India

Immerse yourself in Rajasthan farm life, India
Experience the simple joys of village life in the Indian countryside far from the chaos of the city. MaliramSji, and his wife Manju run this farmstay and will warmly welcome you.
Join MaliramSji in the daily farm activities like feeding the goats, milking the cows or helping with sowing or harvesting. You can also try your hand on learning Rajasthani cooking with Manju. They still cook with a traditional oven called Chulha. She can tell you all about the use of Indian spices and you will definitely indulge your taste buds!
Under the warm afternoon sun you can take a dip in the natural pool or relax on a traditional woven bed in the courtyard. If you like yoga, there will be possibilities too.
